Modify Smart Objects - Tutorial

What are this "smart objects" in Photoshop CS3?

____This tutorial is for Photoshop CS3, and the following example is from our "FREE PSD" page.


Open in Photoshop CS3 the PSD project "24 Screens 1.0 (white)".


In the "Layers" window (F7 or Window/Layers) when we'll open the Goup "REPLACE_IMAGE_HERE" we can see the smart object "EDIT_HERE". This is the "Layer" where you can modify the main image. Double click on the smart object "EDIT_HERE" to open it. As you can see the layer "EDIT_HERE" has also some effects that you can modify (Drop Shadow, Stroke).


Now, we see a NEW WINDOW like this one, with NO reflection and NO shape but ONLY the main image and some "masks". The "masks" are the "rectangles" that shows you only a part of the main image. CLICK on the NEW WINDOW to select it, and then look in the "Layers" window.


Now we can also see the new layers that are included in the NEW WINDOW. In the middle there is another "smart object" layer named "EDIT_IMAGE_HERE". DOUBLE CLICK on "EDIT_IMAGE_HERE" layer.


A 3rd image will appear. This 3rd window is our main image. To replace it, just paste your own image and delete this one. If you want to keep both images, be sure to put your image on TOP in the "Layers" window. "* Note: To see your new image in the final PSD project you MUST SAVE ALL** the "smart objects" first, see example bellow.


Here's an example. Paste the new image over the original then click "Save".


Now go to the 2nd window, the "smart object" with the rectangles to see your new image.


Now "Save" even the second window.


OK! That's all. "Save" again the final window (with the reflections) to modify the entire PSD project with your new image.
